The Arzamas Machinery Plant has developed and tested upgrade packages to enhance the capabilities of the Russian BTR-60 and BTR-70 series of 8 x 8 amphibious armoured personnel carriers (APCs). The BTR-60 series was first fielded more than 40 years ago and is powered by two GAZ-49B six-cylinder petrol engines each of which develops 120 hp. These give a maximum road speed of 80 km/h and an operating range of 500 km. It is fully amphibious, being propelled in the water at a speed of 9 km/h by a single water jet located at the rear of the hull.
