Canada is standing up a new military command, Canada Command (CanadaCom), for the defence of Canada, which will have a wider remit and a more structured approach to emergency responses. The command will assume control of routine and contingency operations between March and June 2006. "We must recognise that the first priority of our military has to be the defence of Canada and of Canadians," said Defence Minister Bill Graham when announcing the restructure.
