The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Armed Forces have exercised a contract option to procure a further two 72 m Project Baynunah corvettes from prime contractor Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB), bringing the class up to a total of six ships. Project Baynunah is intended to provide the UAE Naval Forces with a multirole surface combatant capable of sustained operations throughout the Gulf region. As well as conducting peacetime patrols in the UAE's territorial waters and wider exclusive economic zone, the new corvettes are also designed to undertake intelligence-gathering, maritime interdiction, mine-laying and anti-surface operations.
