The failure to secure a com-mitment by January 2006 that the US intends to purchase additional Boe-ing C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft will result in the shutdown of the aircraft's production line, senior company officials warned on 13 September. "If there is an overwhelming need for more C-17s ... then waiting to make a decision is not good," said Dave Bowman, Boeing's C-17 programme manager. The company is currently building 60 C-17s for the US Air Force under a multiyear arrangement that will conclude with final deliveries in 2008 and give the service 180 aircraft in total.
