US and international non-proliferation officials are scrambling for answers following revelations that a global smuggling network headed by Pakistani scientist AQ Khan provided Iran, Libya, North Korea, and possibly others, with nuclear weapons technology. That the network was able to supply sophisticated nuclear technology for more than a decade without being fully understood or detected, the officials say, shows that controls on the spread of atomic arms are rapidly deteriorating.
