The German Army is significantly boosting its power-projection capability by acquiring a new fleet of armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) to equip a medium force that would be available for rapid deployment missions. Col Erich Lang, section chief for armoured vehicles within the German Ministry of Defence, told the recent SMi Armour and Anti-Armour conference in London that the army is planning to acquire more than 1,500 AFVs to equip its medium forces. The army has selected the Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) Mungo 4x4 multi-purpose vehicle to meet its requirement for a Light Infantry Vehicle to carry two crew members and an eight-strong infantry squad. The initial production contract is for 388 vehicles (JDW 24 December 2003).
