Work has started on the regeneration and upgrade of the second of two former UK Royal Navy (RN) Type 22 Batch 2 frigates being transferred to Romania under a govern- ment-to-government agreement. The ex-HMS London - renamed Regina Maria - was docked down at the Portsmouth facility of Fleet Support Ltd (FSL) in early March to begin a period of surveys and inspections, routine maintenance and defect rectification. Meanwhile, work continues on sister ship ex-HMS Coventry (renamed Regele Ferdinand) alongside in Portsmouth. The ship received its new Oto Melara 76/62 Super Rapid gun mounting on 1 April and is on schedule to begin basin trials in June. Handover is planned for 3 September.
