US shipbuilding giant Northrop Grumman is preparing to invest $500 million over the next five years to improve efficiencies at the company's ageing shipyards. The investments, half of which will be provided by the states of Mississippi and Louisiana as matching funds, are intended to upgrade the infrastructure, capacity and workforce training needed to allow lower costs and increased competitiveness: an outcome long sought for the ailing US industry.
