Confronted with increasing threats to US installations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the US Army and Marine Corps are initiating improvements to their base defences. The army has organised a Counter Fires Task Force to try to find near-term solutions to the threat to its bases in Iraq and elsewhere, particularly from mortar attack. The marines are trying to develop a replacement to the Stinger surface-to-air missile that will focus on slow-moving aircraft like drones and helicopters and will also be able to protect against car bombs.
