The appointment of Turkey's Ambassador to Greece, Yigit Alpogan, as the first civilian Secretary General of the National Security Council (NSC), replacing Gen Suekrue Sariisik on 16 August, has marked a new phase in Turkey's controversial military-civilian relations. Many questions remain, however, over whether such moves will, in the short term, reduce the Turkish military's traditional influence over the country's political life. Many local and foreign analysts say it will not.
