Since the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia have struggled to meet security challenges in their respective countries. Three armed national conflicts, which emerged as a result of the Soviet disintegration, have tremendously influenced the individual states' security policies. In Azerbaijan, the majority Armenian-populated enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh decided to secede from Azerbaijan and received full backing from Armenia proper in its war against Azerbaijan.
