The Dutch shipbuilding industry is campaigning to overturn the Ministry of Defence's (MoD's) dismissal of a rescue plan for the sector, which is struggling due to a 10-year dearth of Dutch orders. The campaign will be fought "in the parliament, in the media and elsewhere", senior industry sources said on 28 October. Initial support has been provided by right-wing parliamentarian Hans van Baalen, defence spokesman of the ruling VVD free-market party. The rescue plan, drawn up by the Dutch Naval Shipbuilding Cluster (NMC), proposed ordering four long-range patrol ships and a helicopter carrier for the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) within the next few years. The NMC consists of Royal Schelde Group, Thales Nederland and Imtech Marine & Offshore.
