Despite efforts in recent years to reduce the load carried by US troops into battle, they nevertheless still "waddled to war" in Afghanistan and Iraq, as one defence official put it, weighed down by as much as 55kg of equipment and their pockets bulging. This is because the army keeps adding to the capabilities given to soldiers, while current technology can only go so far in shrinking the size of battery packs and body armour, army officials say. However, the army is hopeful that investments in nanotechnology will help produce substantial reductions in soldier system weight and bulk by the 2020-25 timeframe.
