General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and General Dynamics' Gulfstream Aerospace unveiled their respective aircraft bids last week for the US Navy's Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) programme. General Atomics dubs its unmanned design the Predator B Extended Range (ER) system. It is a modified version of the company's Predator B unmanned air vehicle (UAV), which the US Air Force is procuring (Jane's Defence Weekly 24 July 2002). The ER vehicle features the same 10.98m fuselage as the B model, but incorporates the longer wings of the company's Altair drone, which is being pursued for the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration. These extend the vehicle's wing span by 6.09m to 26.23m. The ER uses the same Honeywell TPE 331-10T gas-turbine engine as the Predator B.
