摘要

Russia is considering offering support to NATO's forthcoming mission in Afghanistan, including possible airlift assistance for allied troops, pending talks in the new NATO-Russia Council (NRC), said diplomats and NATO officials. The development, along with an expansion of co-operation in other areas, comes as a new Russian ambassador to NATO, Konstantin Totski, has taken up the post, with a different approach to his predecessor. "Russia is now ready to share information, including intelligence, about Afghanistan," a diplomatic source told Jane's Defence Weekly after a meeting of the NRC at ambassadorial level on 23 July, which marked Totski's debut as leader of the Russian delegation. The source said Totski also tentatively held out the possibility of offering NATO access to Russian airspace, the airlifting of NATO troops, in-country medical evacuation service and co-operation in securing Afghanistan's northern borders with former Soviet republics Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
