The Army of the Republic of Macedonia (ARM) has experienced first-hand that Cold War-era military structures and weaponry are of little use when it comes to confronting asymmetric threats. The 2001 crisis with Albanian separatists pitted a bloated, ill-equipped and obsolete ARM against the highly motivated and skilled insurgent National Liberation Army (NLA). While ARM losses were light, a number of lessons were learned, says Macedonian Minister of Defence Vlado Buckovski. "Our experience in 2001 showed us that our [main battle] tanks, heavy armour and aircraft were not appropriate."
