The US Marine Corps (USMC) will continue to be defined as a sea-based force despite recent operations in Afghanistan and Iraq where marines operated hundreds of miles from the sea, says Lt Gen Edward Hanlon, commander of the USMC Combat Development Command (MCCDC). However, amphibious landings must be quicker and achieve greater surprise than the careful build-up of landing forces that have characterised USMC operations in the past, Gen Hanlon says. This is in line with the USMC's Ship-to-Objective Manoeuvre concept.
