Land combat over the past few years has changed dramatically. Armoured reconnaissance is no exception. The traditional role of armoured reconnaissance has been to scout in advance of the main force and collect accurate tactical information about the enemy and the terrain ahead and relay this information back to the commander. Scout units can also conduct screening operations on the flanks as well as route reconnaissance and convoy escort. Although some countries prefer to fight for information, most prefer the stealthy approach so that the enemy remains unaware of being detected. The typical older-generation light reconnaissance vehicle was a 4 x 4 scout car, such as the UK Ferret or the Russian BRDM-2, which could avoid detection due to its small size to and was armed only with machine guns. Observation equipment was limited to day sights and/or day/infra-red night devices. Information was relayed back to the next chain of command via radio, although radios could be intercepted. The vehicle had few means of determining its own position with any degree of accuracy.
