After the most serious flare-up of violence in 16 months, tension along the Israel-Lebanon border remained high as Jane's Defence Weekly went to press. The escalation has seen diplomats scrambling for an agreement to restore calm to the volatile border. These exchanges left one Israeli civilian dead and one S-60 57mm anti-aircraft battery -belonging to the Islamic Resistance, the armed militia of the Lebanese Hizbullah ('Party of God')- destroyed. On 8 August, Hizbullah fighters attacked outposts manned by the Israel Defence Force (IDF) in the Sheba'a Farms, on Lebanon's southeast border with the Golan Heights. The assault, in which some 100 mortar rounds and 15-20 107mm Katyusha surface-to-surface rockets and 9K11 Malyutka anti-tank guided missiles were fired, was the first since 22 January.
