Demand from military and police users will determine the success of two competing personal defence weapon (PDW) calibres, following a NATO decision to postpone indefinitely the selection of a new small-arms calibre for the alliance. NATO was scheduled to make a choice by the end of 2002 between FN Herstal's 5.7 x 28mm cartridge and the 4.6 x 30mm ammunition developed by Heckler & Koch (H&K) in collaboration with BAE Systems, RO Defence. However, the evaluation process reached an impasse that forced the Conference of National Armament Directors (CNAD), meeting in Brussels from 6-7 November, to terminate the selection procedure as it could not achieve the consensus necessary to make a formal decision.
