The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Air Force is poised to strengthen its position as one of the most advanced air arms in the Middle East region, through its introduction from next year of 80 F-16E/F Block 60 fighters. Dubbed the Desert Falcon in UAE service, the aircraft is described by Lockheed Martin officials as "the latest and greatest F-16" to have been produced. Acquired under a 2000 contract worth around $6.4 billion, the UAE's new frontline fighter capability will comprise 55 single-seatE- and 25 two-seat F-model aircraft, the first of which will be rolled out before this month's Dubai air show. The enhanced-configuration aircraft will make its debut flight from Lockheed Martin's Fort Worth production plant in Texas by year-end. First deliveries to the UAE are scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2004.
