The US Department of Defense (DoD) released only a few details of its highly-classified Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) last week, designed to outline the future of US nuclear forces. Briefing reporters, Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy J D Crouch announced that the Bush administration intends to reduce the number of "operationally deployed" nuclear weapons from the current level of 6,000 down to 1,700-2,200 by 2012. The cuts, Crouch said, will be implemented in stages, with an initial goal of reducing to 3,800 nuclear weapons by Fiscal Year 2007 (FY07).
