In the 12 months since the 31 January 2001 relaunch of the JDW 20, when the index was reformulated and given a new baseline, the index has outperformed major stock markets in the USA and Europe. At the relaunch, the index marked 1,353 points, up from its 6 January 2000 baseline of 1,000, and nominally higher than its 1,345 points on 30 January this year. This placid year-on-year picture, however, masks turbulence. The index rose as high as 1,432 in May and dived as low as 1,130 after 11 September.
