摘要

As president of state-owned Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI), Moshe Keret has had a tough year. He has watched the collapse of his company's civilian aircraft support business in the wake of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington and the cancellation of his company's Phalcon airborne early-warning system sale to China. There is also scepticism over efforts to sell the same system to India (Jane's Defence Weekly 16 January). Keret does not expect a smooth 2002. However, IAI enters what Keret believes will be a downturn in both the civilian and defence aerospace market with a strong hand. IAI has achieved a record number of new orders in 2001 of $2.88 billion, an increase from $2.6 billion the previous year. The company's current backlog of orders is about $4 billion. Of the new contracts, 76% are meant for export, of which 61 % are in the civilian sector. In Israel, 75% of IAI sales were to the military in 2001.
