Years of procurement neglect have forced the US Air Force (USAF) to marshal its resources against a progressively invasive threat to its aircraft fleet - the increasing age of structures and systems. Such is its severity, the problem has helped to instil a new culture of awareness and has led to the adoption of innovative solutions to keep ageing aircraft airworthy - an absolute necessity, service officials say, in the absence of quick-fix solutions on the acquisition front. The recent focus on the USAF's fleet of inflight refuelling aircraft has highlighted the problem facing the service. The need to find a replacement for the Boeing 707-based KC-115 tanker is driven heavily by the debilitating age of the fleet; the average aircraft is around 37 years old. According to current analysis, this figure will have increased to an average age of around 50 years by 2020. In the meantime, the aircraft is spending ever longer periods in maintenance. Around one-third of the fleet is undergoing depot supervision at any given time and mission-capable rates have dropped below 70%.
