Hitherto, the disposition across the broad political spectrum in Israel has been characterised by a determination to stand united in the face of any external or internal aggression perceived to threaten the existence of the state. Underlying this was the assumption by successive Israeli governments that the national security policy was backed by a broad national consensus. The Israel Defence Force (IDF), a citizen's army and a symbol of national unity, was perceived as the embodiment of this consensus. However, as the Israeli government employs unprecedented measures to subdue the 18-month uprising by the Palestinians against Israel authority in the West Bank and Gaza Strip -dubbed the Al-Aqsa Intifada - and to deter it from further spreading into Israel proper, there are indications that the consensus is beginning to fragment.
