Italy's Oto Melara recently fired for the first time its new 120/45 mm smoothbore tank gun mounted in the new HIT-FACT turret, developed from the well-known Centauro tank destroyer turret. The new turret will be displayed for the first time at the 17-21 June Eurosatory exhibition. The HITFACT turret, developed as a modular concept, can also be fitted with Oto Melara's new 105/52mm rifled gun. Both guns have been developed with a new high-strength steel used in the latest Oto Melara 127mm naval gun. The steel allows the weight of the oscillating mass to be reduced while increasing the maximum chamber pressure of the guns to about 1,000 bar. This gives the new guns a consid- erable stretch capability to employ new kinetic-energy ammunition.
