The US Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of State have redesigned their peacekeeping training programmes in Africa to promote long-term relationships with participating countries and offer aid packages specific to a country's needs. US officials already are working with Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal to establish training seminars under the new programmes, the first of which may be scheduled for early 2003. South Africa is still evaluating whether it will participate. Programme officials will be seeking $30 million per year to support the effort.
