The Israeli Ministry of Defence (MoD) is considering the procurement of an indigenously-developed assault rifle to eventually replace the 5.56mm M16 series of assault rifles currently in service with the Israel Defence Force. MoD officials said the ministry has decided 'in principle' to procure weapons from Israel Military Industries' (IMI's) 5.56mm TAR-21 family of assault rifles. "The idea was to ensure that the Tavor would be lighter than the M16," said Ami Maor, director- general of IMI's Integrated Security Systems Group. "The IDF has been providing us with revisions and we are constantly making improvements."
