Following initial flight evaluations, the US Air Force (USAF) has begun to define the way in which it wants to use its next-generation General Atomics MQ-9A Predator unmanned air vehicle (UAV), according to a senior official involved in the programme. The USAF envisages the MQ-9A (dubbed Predator B by General Atomics) as a loitering 'hunter-killer' platform, able to combine weapons launch and persistent reconnaissance or 'hunting' capabilities. The aircraft will use synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) pictures and either streaming video or still imagery, and have the ability to attack time-critical or fleeting ground targets with precision-guided munitions. These targets represent one of the most problematic challenges for the USAF.
