The UK government is to accelerate the procurement of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) and provide more funding for special forces as part of its response to the growing threat of terrorism. These measures were presented in the 'New Chapter' to the Labour government's 1998 Strategic Defence Review (SDR) that was launched after the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the USA (Jane's Defence Weekly 20 February). In presenting the new document, Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon said the work was "designed to ensure that our defence policies, capabilities and force structures matched the new challenges".
