In the wake of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks in the USA, the government of Yemen initiated steps to seriously confront Al-Qaeda and other Islamic militant groups active in the state ―an initiative actively supported by the US government. The attack may also indicate that militant groups in Yemen feel threatened and are acting to undermine the crackdown by Sanaa.
