The US Army formally received its first Line-of-Sight Anti-Tank (LOSAT) weapon system from Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control during the Association of the US Army conference on 22 October. The system is one of 12 being built as part of the engineering-and-manufacturing development (EMD) phase of the programme. "This is an entirely new class of weapon that the army has not fielded before. It really changes the way we fight against threat armour," explained Col Jed Sheehan, Kinetic Energy Missiles (KEMs) project manager within the US Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. "We out-range the enemy threat and countermeasures are not effective against LOSAT so it provides overwhelming lethality against any armour threat now and in the future." The LOSAT has four KEMs mounted on the roof of an Ml 114 heavy High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) chassis. With a speed of more than 1, 500m/s, the missile reaches maximum range in less than five seconds. The KEM is a 'hit to kill' missile with no explosive warhead; its long-rod penetrator destroys the target through sheer force.
