Airborne ground surveillance radars are on the verge of being able to find, track and identify vehicles, even in mountainous terrain, dramatically improving a commander's view of the battlefield. While airborne ground surveillance radar platforms such as the Northrop Grumman E-8C Joint Surveillance Targeting and Attack Radar System (Joint STARS) can track moving vehicles over large swaths of flat territory, it cannot identify vehicles and is hampered by rough ground.
