Plans are being formulated for a joint US/UK programme to develop a torpedo tube-launched version of the new Tactical Tomahawk (TacTom) land attack cruise missile. Such a development would ensure the long-term viability of the UK Royal Navy (RN) Tomahawk programme, under which the service's entire nuclear attack submarine (SSN) fleet is being adapted to launch Tomahawk from existing torpedo tubes. It would also allow US Navy (USN) submarines without vertical launcher systems (VLS) to fire the weapon.
