Many often cite the First Chechen War as evidence of the decline of the Russian Army. The general view is that poorly-trained and badly-organised units were launched into battle at the command of careless and incompetent generals. The war will always be associated with images such as the burning tanks and BMP infantry fighting vehicles on the streets of Groznyy on New Year's Day 1995.
