Five UK shipyards have received an Invitation To Tender (ITT) for the construction of two new Alternative Landing Ship Logistic (ALSL) vessels for the UK's Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA). The ITT also asks for options for up to three more ALSL ships. The ALSL requirement, budgeted at approximately £130 million ($206 million), calls for the replacement of the 30-year old LSLs RFASir Geraint and KFASir Perdvale in 2003-04. It is believed that bidders will have six weeks to respond to the tender document, with a contract award expected towards the end of this year.
