The USA's Boeing and Italy's Alenia have demonstrated that they can treble the range of the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) in the first test firing of the precision guidance kit fitted with a new wing assembly. In late April, a JDAM-Extended Range (ER) kit, fitted on a 2,0001b (874kg) BLU-109 warhead, was dropped from a US Air Force (USAF) F-16 flying at 20,000ft (6,100m) at a speed of Mach 0.78 overEglin Air Force Base, Florida. It struck a predetermined target 38.6km away, according to programme officials. JDAM's traditional range is about 12.9km officials said.
