Although there was no known official policy to clip the wings of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), that is what Gen Ibrahim Babangida's military government did after the service's 1985 attempt to topple his government. The coup failed and the ringleaders shot, but this was not enough for Gen Babangida. He did not need convincing to sideline the service, rendering the 15,000-strong force powerless. The force has paid the price for its audacity ever since with a lack of vital equipment and financial strangulation.
