The complex civil wars and insurgencies under way in North Africa have triggered robust international interventions such as the French Operation 'Barkhane' and the formation of the French-led G5 Sahel Force regional military framework that includes Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger. Meanwhile, Egypt, Sudan, and several Gulf kingdoms have intervened directly and indirectly in Libya since the fall of the regime of Colonel Ghaddafi, while increasing European and US involvement in the region has focused on improving stability and the capacity of partner countries to tackle insurgencies in an attempt to restrain mass migration northward.
