In April the UK Royal Navy (RN) Type 23 frigate HMS Montrose will arrive in Bahrain to begin an extended period of forward-deployment in the Gulf region. Alongside the opening of the UK Naval Support Facility (NSF) in the kingdom last year, the decision to base an RN frigate in this strategically important area of operations has sent a clear signal of intent to friends and allies in the region, according to Commodore Steve Dainton, the UK's most senior naval officer in the Middle East. "We've seen competing priorities elsewhere in the world having an effect on [our] force flow in and out of the Middle East over the last year," said Cdre Dainton, who as United Kingdom Maritime Component Commander (UKMCC) is responsible for all RN warships, aircraft, and personnel deployed in the Middle East maritime theatre. "We've seen ships regularly departing from the UK, coming out to do maritime security work, reassuring our allies, deterring any would-be aggressors, and then moving on," he added.
