When it comes to the US military presence in Europe the nation is not prepared to deter Russian aggression, meaning that additional land, maritime, and ISR assets are needed, according to the head of US European Command (USEUCOM), General Curtis Scaparrotti. Testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee on 5 March, the four-star general, who is also NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, told lawmakers that he was "not comfortable" with US deterrence against Russia and called for the additional forces and assets to fill in the gap. "We've clearly made progress in European Command," the general said. "We've added forces and capabilities, we've improved the readiness, but I would tell you... that I'm not comfortable yet with the deterrent posture that we have in Europe in support of the National Defense Strategy [NDS]."
