Increased airstrikes and suicide bombings contributed to more civilians being killed in Afghanistan in 2018 than in any other year since at least 2009, according to a report published by the United Nations on 24 February. The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) documented 10,993 civilian casualties (3,804 deaths and 7,189 injured) in the Central Asian country between 1 January and 31 December 2018: a 5% increase in overall civilian casualties and an 11% rise in civilian deaths compared to 2017. Among the dead were 927 children: the highest recorded number in the 17-year-old conflict during a single year since UNAMA began documenting civilian casualties in 2009.
