The plan to concentrate the majority of the United Kingdom's 3 Commando Brigade's major units into a 'super garrison' in the Plymouth region in Devon have been scaled back and delayed, Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson announced on 28 February. The closure of 24 other army, navy, and air force bases has also been delayed. The 'Better Defence Estates' initiative, unveiled in December 2016, was created to sell off 56 military sites to generate funds to re-invest elsewhere across the ministry. This would have involved three major units of 3 Commando Brigade moving from locations in Somerset and Devon to Plymouth.
