When US forces were in the early days of Operation 'Roundup' in the Middle Euphrates River Valley in October 2018 - ground operations billed as the final push to defeat the Islamic State - some observers in Washington mused that US air operations would be threatened by Russia's decision to provide the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad with multiple S-300 surface-to-air missile (SAM) batteries. US forces, however, said at the time that the presence of the weapon system "hasn't changed anything" and they would simply deconflict airspace with Moscow before sending aircraft into an area covered by the S-300 system.
