US Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan is eying a smaller space force that would serve as part of the US Air Force (USAF): a contrast to US President Donald Trump's ambition to have a space force as its own separate, but equal, service. "I think about the discussions we're going to have over the next five or six months," Shanahan told reporters on 29 January, "it's going to be small, [with] as small as possible a footprint". Trump accelerated a simple Pentagon report to Congress when he publicly called for a new space force in June 2018. The Department of Defense (DoD) was directed in the fiscal year 2018 (FY 2018) National Defense Authorization Act to produce a final report by 1 August that year on the recommended organisational and management structure for the DoD space component.
