The new theatre of conflict on Myanmar's western flank will further extend an army already overstretched by multiple ethnic insurgencies to its north. Given the military's proclivity for brutal counter-insurgency tactics and disinterest in winning 'hearts and minds' in minority areas, the potential for serious escalation is real. The latest fighting, which picked up during October 2018 and spread during December and into the new year, has involved running battles with the insurgents of the ethnic Rakhine Arakan Army (AA): a Buddhist force demanding far-reaching autonomy. The storming of four police posts by rebels operating in company strength on 4 January, killing 13 officers and wounding nine, underscored the extent of the crisis that Myanmar's government and military, or Tatmadaw, had previously played down.
