Russia's VTB Bank has reportedly signed currency deals with counterparts from China and India that could facilitate defence trade between Moscow and its two most important Asian defence-trade partners. The complex deals, signed recently, will enable payments for defence equipment to proceed in local currencies, ditching requirements for US dollars and also the need to support such contracts through traditional letters of credit. The move is driven by efforts in all three countries to exploit loopholes in the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), which was signed into US law in August 2017.
