US military leaders say they are inching closer to launching a new, multinational maritime task force in Central and South America. Over the past five hurricane seasons, which are roughly from June to November, US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) has deployed a Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force-Southern Command (SPMAGTF-SC) to Central America to train local forces and help with potential disaster relief efforts. There, the 300 marines and sailors work alongside military personal from around South America and the department is seeking to strengthen these partnerships to build a formal multinational maritime task force in the region.
