President Vladimir Putin outlined the direction that he sees Russia's future inter-state relations taking in a speech at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on 7 June. Within the realms of the president's vision it is clear that the perceived belligerent attitude of the United States towards trade may present a flashpoint for future conflict. Expanding on Russia's trade interests, Putin referred specifically to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. "This project is designed to enhance energy security in Europe and create new jobs. It fully meets the national interests of all participants, both European and Russian," he declared. "But this does not match the logic and interests of those [in the US] who became used to exclusiveness and 'anything goes' behaviour in the framework of the existing universalist model... therefore, endless attempts to torpedo this project are made."
